If this is near the true figure then updating the Google website (for example modifying the css with input[type="submit"]) would cost a packet. It would be nice to know how all this works. Anyone know how they administer their systems?

??? I read somewhere about how a tiny bit of extra html can make the difference of millions of dollars a year for Google. So yes, changes cost loads, or can, if it involves extra code.
I'm pretty sure they administer their site using frontpage... :P
