(West/South West) Garages were running dry over the weekend as motorists queued to fill up their vehicles with petrol.

By late afternoon yesterday warning signs on the M5 were alerting drivers that the Moto services in Exeter were out of diesel. Other petrol stations were taking steps to ration fuel.

One petrol station owner took the unusual step of closing his petrol station, on the Exeter Road in Tiverton, on Saturday to conserve fuel for regular customers. He said he would give priority to them until the next scheduled delivery on Tuesday.

The manager of a filling station in Exwick has put all grades of petrol and diesel up to £1.99 a litre.

He said his decision to raise the cost of filling up came down to the simple principle of "supply and demand" and that he was doing it to ration how much people bought. (West/South West)
